Teaching Career

I have been teaching for 15 years now and have taught in many schools across Cheshire. I started my career at Barnton Primary School teaching Reception and Year 1. This is where I completed my final teaching practice and also where I first met Mrs Dean. From here, I moved on to teach reception at Darnhall Primary School. I stayed there for a year, until I was asked to come back to Barnton. At Barnton I mainly taught KS1 before having my first child, Jessica. I worked part time while Jess was a baby, then returned to full-time teaching at a lovely church school in Runcorn called St Berteline’s CE Primary. I loved the family feel of a church school so much, all my school since have been church schools. I had Oliver at St Berts, then moved to Duddon St Peters so I could teach part-time and still spend time with my young family. Finally, I was lucky enough to work part-time at Lower Peover and St Mary’s Catholic school, until I was asked to work here at Lower Peover full time.

Why I teach

I chose to teach because I was inspired by one of my own primary school teachers – I wanted to inspire others in the same way. My teacher made it fun for me and I want to do the same! I want to make a difference. I love watching the change in pupils over the year, you watch them grow in confidence and self belief, and above all this is the biggest catalyst for getting them to learn and grow… to help bring out the best in them. Teaching is fun, no day is the same and no matter what challenges you face, how down you feel, children make you smile. Teaching is also rewarding – nothing beats seeing my children’s faces light up when you help them to finally overcome a problem or understand a tricky concept!

Hobbies

When I’m not at school I love spending time with my family. I am married with two children so keep they keep me very busy! We have two dogs so we love to be outdoors, walking and cycling together. Our favourite place to escape is on the beach in Wales, or in a forest or park near here. Teaching can be a hectic job, so when we’re not at school, I like to catch up with my friends and family.

Something you don’t know about me!

I ran the London marathon in 2010 and have entered the ballot for next year – I will find out in October if I’ve been lucky enough to secure a place, so keep your fingers crossed!!
